The Anxious Pet, Family Vacations, And You: What To Do In These Situations
Posted on: 30 September 2019
Cats and dogs with anxiety? Yes, it is a real state of mind for your furry friends, and it happens more often than you know. However, cats and dogs exhibit anxiety in very different ways. Cats may urinate or defecate where they should not, even if they are the only furry animal in the house and you have several cat boxes in multiple locations for your feline friend. The anxiety may also cause cats to develop kidney or bladder problems, as they will be too tense to release the urine when they should and the urine will become toxic to their systems.
Dogs, when they are anxious, become destructive. They know they are being destructive as they will quickly hide when you come home and find out what they did. It almost always involves ripping things apart, rummaging through garbage, and knocking things over and smashing them. The big question here is, "What happens when you take a family vacation?" If this is the first year you have had this pet and you are planning a family getaway, here are some pet services to consider.
Medication
There are anti-anxiety medications for cats and dogs. The pets take them once daily, just like humans with anxiety take meds once daily. The medications do take some time to begin working, and then your pet is likely to sleep all day, but at least you know he/she is not doing any damage. Still, it is not a full-proof solution for those times when everyone is going to be far from home.
Some Hotels Allow Pets
Some hotels do allow pets. You will spend hours scrounging online just to find these hotels, and then you may find that they are booked. However, dogs are almost always welcome, and cats may be welcome only at a very limited number of establishments. If your pets come with you, they have less to be anxious about, although some pets hate to travel. It may just be best to board them.
Pet Services for the Anxious Pet and Owners on Vacation
A pet sitter can come to your home daily to check on your pet, feed and water the pet, play with or pet your furry friend, and then leave. If that option is still not to your liking, consider pet daycare and boarding, where your pet is pampered and watched and medicated around the clock until you come home from vacation.
